Healthy Minds and Bodies

May 31, 2019 By admin Leave a Comment

Thank you to all our athletes and their parents and caregivers for a great first week of conditioning!  It’s great to see these young athletes come out excited and eager to put in work on the field.  We were fortunate to have such beautiful weather this week…but we know the heat is coming.

As the temperature starts to climb proper hydration is extremely important!  Coaches have been stressing this point with your athletes, but hydration starts at home before they even set foot on the field.  PLEASE encourage your athletes to drink plenty of WATER today and every day before practice.  They should be drinking 1/2 ounce – 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight in order to be properly hydrated.  Water will be available during practice for all athletes, but they should also bring their own water to drink.  Coaching staff will provide frequent water breaks and will closely monitor all of our athletes for signs of dehydration or other heat related illness.  Player safety is our number one priority every day!

A healthy athletic body will also need fuel to function at it’s best on the field.  A light meal or snack that includes easy-to-digest carbohydrate-containing foods, such as fruit, crackers, or bread will help provide the fuel needed to perform at their best.  After practice experts recommend eating carbs (fruit, pretzels, a sports drink, etc.) within 30 minutes after intense activity and again 2 hours later. Your young athlete’s body will be rebuilding muscle tissue and replenishing energy stores and fluids for up to 24. So it’s important that the post-activity meal be a balance of lean protein, carbs, and fat.

Sleep is the final component that will help your athlete remain healthy on and off the field.  The body does the very important work of detoxing and repairing tissue damage, both of which are vital for young athletes. Not getting enough sleep on a regular basis makes you feel tired and sluggish which makes drills even more difficult than they would if you were well-rested. Making sure your young athlete gets at least 8 hours of sleep every night will help keep their body and mind sharp!

We look forward to seeing more and more faces as the summer progresses.  Remember that conditioning is free and open to all boys and girls age 5-15…so tell your friends and neighbors to come out and join us!

GO CATS!
